The streets were not very large and there were very few cars or motorcycles. People travelled here and there almost by bike or on foot. The houses were small and had a garden around. Children could play merrily and safely on the pavements. There were few big stores in the town. And especially there is no pollution and not much noise. People can live in the quiet and peaceful atmosphere of a small town and lead an easy life. Now the town has quite changed. The town becomes noisy and busy almost all day and night. At any time people can hear the noise of all kinds of traffic: cars, motorcycles, trucks,... The streets are dirty and usually crowded with cars and motorcycles. Getting around the town now is rather difficult because of traffic jams. Small houses are replaced by expensive tall buildings. On the both sides of large streets are big stores with expensive imported goods. And there are large parks with many shady trees for people’s entertainments and relaxation. However, the people must suffer much pollution and noise. They hardly have enough fresh air to breathe and most of them must have a hard life due to very expensive daily necessities. Dear Tom, I’m writing this letter to tell you about my neighborhood as you asked me in your last letter. I live in a flat in an apartment building with a lot of migrants. My next-door neighbor is a family with two children, a boy and a girl. In the apartment above mine is a Chinese family. They have three lovely and friendly kids. Their parents always speak to them in Chinese, but they answer in Vietnamese. There’s a corner market across the street from my building, but the food is not good enough. Fortunately, there’s a small supermarket just two blocks down the street, the food there is very good and fresh. Around the corner from my place there’s a restaurant with a strange sign : Chinese - European - Asian Food. What country does the owner come from? I have no idea. The local school is straight down the street about five blocks south, so I can walk there, about thirty minutes. The school isn’t very beautiful, but it is a good place for children in the neighborhood to play in. There’s also a clinic a few blocks away from our building where we can get immediate medical care if we fall ill. All the residents organize many community activities to foster (cố’ VŨ) closer ties between the people in the neighborhood. My neighbors are helpful and friendly. Everybody enthusiastically helps to make the neighborhood a pleasant place to live in. I’m glad to be a part of this “great and big” family. Sincerely, Your friend, Tam.
