Á Vận Hội đầu tiên được tổ chức ở New Delhi, Ân Độ (năm 1951). Chỉ 489 vận động viên từ 11 quốc gia tham dự Á Vận Hội. Sáu môn thể thao thi đâu là bóng rổ, đua xe đạp, bóng đá, thể thao dưới nước, điền kinh và cử tạ.
