WHILE YOU READ Read the passage and then do the tasks that follow. We can have the lights and fans fixed. D: One more thing is our friends sitting near the windows always get wet when it rains because of the broken windows. C: OK. These problems should be brought in the next Parent-Teacher meeting. B: It’s worth that. LISTENING BEFORE YOU LISTEN Work in pairs. Ask and answer the questions. (Làm việc từng hai người. WHILE YOU LISTEN Task 1: Listen and choose the best option to complete the following sentences. D 2. B 3. B 4. B TAPESCRIPT In an informal survey carried out in Perth, Western Australia, students were asked to give their views on what makes an effective school. 80 percent of the students felt that mutual respect in the classroom was essential for effective learning to take place. This implied that the students should be treated as individuals with both their strengths and their weaknesses. 60 percent of the students felt they should be encouraged to set realistic goals for their own learning, and to have positive attitudes towards themselves and others. About 55 percent of the students expected their teachers to be motivated and interested in what they were doing, this would then reflect in the performance of the students. Nearly all the students believed that learning should be centered on important life skills such as communication, building self-respect, and self-confidence, the ability to learn from failure, and time management, suited to the maturity of the students concerned. One hundred percent of the students felt that the social side of school was as important as academic activities. The older students felt that they should be allowed to give some input into school decision-making which had a direct effect on students. Task 2: Listen again and answer the questions. (Nghe lại và trả lời câu hỏi.) It took place in Perth. 80 percent of the students felt the mutual respect was essential for effective learning to take place. B: Oh, as I see, it isn’t good enough. C: Well. At present we are heard much of conditions for effective learning: good teachers and good textbooks. D: Which of these both do you think is better? B: In my opinion, these both factors must go together. We can’t separate them apart. A: You mean only one factor cannot bring about good learning. B: Sure. These both have a very close relation. C: However I think the factor "teachers" plays a more important role, because it’s man that decides the success, not "textbooks”, which are only the material or tools. B: OK, OK. Only good tools cannot give a good result. It’s obvious that there must be the users - teachers. A: That’s right, but if there’re both, won’t it be better? D: You bet! May we have this! D.
